John initially joined The British Transport Police and was based in London.

During his time with the BTP John worked on three major disasters, namely the Kings Cross fire and the Clapham Junction and Purley rail disasters. Senior officers quickly identified John’s investigatory skills and Detective Officer potential and seconded him as a Detective within the BTP London robbery squad.
